Thanks Heidi. The world is definitely a sad place right now, and I fear it will soon be much sadder, at least for those who care more for others, than for themselves. A dear old friend from Equador messaged me yesterday with thoughts of worry and hope. Today she offered her condolences on behalf of her country and the rest of the world. This is surely the saddest day on record for the future of our world as we knew it.
Thank you Heidi for sharing this. I’ve long considered the hypocrisy of who we are as a nation. As Americans we like to feel as though we have the monopoly on righteousness. When in fact we couldn’t be further from it. This “righteous nation”was founded on the spoils of invaders displacing those here before us. I laugh and ridicule now those among us who cry out in alarm at the influx of immigrants coming into this country. Oh what a short term memory we have when only 300 plus years ago we were those same invaders. As Malcom X said…”those chickens have come home to roost”. American righteousness is an illusion…nothing has changed from our European forebears, we are no different from our colonial ancestors, as much as we like to think we are. I grew up being indoctrinated that this was the greatest nation in the world and history. What a lie we were told, the educational system conveniently leaving out the “inconvenient truth” of who we really are.
I went and voted, not happy with either of my choices, but I voted all the same. My civic duty right? I voted but I’m not optimistic for the future even if the one I voted for wins. For so long, we American citizens have just always assumed the United States would be around. Now I see how naive that is. Look at history, empires never last and always eventually fall. And this nation is no different…we truly are an arrogant people.
I apologize for soap boxing…but reading what you wrote here has resonated with me, it’s what I’ve been thinking and feeling for a long long time. So I voted today out of duty, but I’m sad and embarrassed to be an American. Regardless of who wins, those with wealth, power and influence will continue to rape and exploit this land for their own gain. As a global citizen I truly shudder at what the day after will bring.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Eric. Here's to the day when what Rumi wrote all those years ago comes true. Even if we aren't alive to see it, I like to think I can hear the band singing somewhere in the distance.
Our work continues...
